Sep 16, 2011 - Our airwaves continue to educate us on new drugs, medical devices and orthopedic devices causing complications. Jewish Lawyers Network now has four helplines for the unsuspecting public. The first helpline was with seniors in mind experiencing various complications from hip replacements. The most serious being the metal on metal. The second has been to help women who have experienced horrific complications with the various prolapse surgical mesh, mesh patch and sling devices for both uterine prolapse and incontinence. Now still another hits our airwaves. The latest helpline is for diabetics and their care givers. The new drugs for Type two Diabetes are showing serve side effects. Some have been pulled off the European markets. The Diabetic drug Actos has posted warnings and concerns for Bladder cancer. The purpose of these helplines is to give people the latest news, offer some support and guidance and connect people with a lawyer who has expertise in these particular complications. Lisa Spitzer MSW who monitors these lines says "most of our callers are frightened and are hoping for answers. Some of the worst stories I have heard are from women who have undergone the mesh procedures" "These complications are severe and have effected quality of life" "Many are in pain all the time, cannot sit, drive a car or have sexual relations" "The hip replacements effect seniors the most although the mesh is used in older women to assist with incontinence and organ prolapse" "Seniors are going thru multiple surgeries resulting from defective hip replacements"
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is informing the public that use of the diabetes medication Actos (pioglitazone) for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Information about this risk will be added to the Warnings and Precautions section of the label for pioglitazone-containing medicines. The patient Medication Guide for these medicines will also be revised to include information on the risk of bladder cancer.”Every year dangerous and defective drugs affect people. "As a social worker" Spitzer says, "these cases are of great concern to me. Just last week there was an advisory meeting concerning the complications of the mesh devices for women. "It is to my understanding" says Spitzer that the FDA will poll the panel of researchers and physicians on whether to reclassify the devices and gather thoughts on how to conduct clinical studies" "There is not only the physical ramifications of defective products but the emotional. The mesh malfunctions are effecting marriages, women are depressed and emotionally distraught ,suffering and very angry at male doctors who appear to have very little sensitivity." When a manufacturer produces a product that patients depend on, they need to be held to the highest standards." Spitzer continues" The helplines act as a support and emotional catharsis for these individuals.
